10/14/2010

I guess this is more like a post game wrap up right here. The body is in shock. Mostly to be back in my own bed and between familiar walls my body is relaxing and realizes that it can sleep sleep sleep.
Elsewhere was such a strange trip. High stress, hard work and lots of over stimulation. I really didn’t experience much of Greensboro and yet I think I saw more of it than I would have expected. It is always a challenge to engage the space in which you inhabit yet not get lost with in it so much that you forget that there is yet more spaces beyond the one your in. I have also had to remember that this is life. It doesn’t simply end at certain points. There are no official bookmarks by which you can rewind back to or fast forward to the next chapter. Often times there are things simply to be learned from a situation. Ideas of good, bad, fun or tragic aren’t really the point. What do we learn from a situation? I think there are some very interesting things for me to understand about myself that hopefully as I begin to understand them more fully over time that I will begin to shape my life in a more beneficial manner.
Now beyond waxing philosophical- the next several weeks are going to be extremely hectic, as I now look at all the accumulation from over the years. Accumulation that now must be dealt with, packed, trashed and picked through. The future will be pared away.

Well with lots of things to accomplish not yet accomplished today was the day to end our stay at Elsewhere. Kind of anti-climactic really but maybe that what need to happen. We had lunch with Jeremy at the Mellow Mushroom across the street where we just sort of chatted and recapped and made jokes. We had intended after that to use the rest of the day to try and put together an information package for Michelle who is putting together a database of sorts to be molded into an Elsewhere web offering that acts as a resource for artist and those who are interested in the artist process and works. This attempt at extending our stay was met with loud music and general Elsewhere rukus and I decided that there was know way that I could handle concentrating on anything that resembled reconstructing my CV or writing an artist statement. Time to go. You can no longer stay here. You just don’t belong here anymore. So we packed it all up and drove back to Richmond, which was still there.

We basically finished around noon today. I don’t have an official tally of how many individual textural hybrids we’ve constructed, somewhere to the tune of 120, with more footage that hasn’t been touched I’m sure.
We also had our exit interview with Jeremy today. It was conducted like an interview for a radio or magazine feature, which was rather nice. Our conversation shed light on the over all process, the time spent in reflection on the project as well as our time at elsewhere. Afterwards it was time for a shower and shave and some mild celebration.
Later in conversation we discovered that Corwin Levy had this past January spend time at the Milkwood residency, which is just way strange and cool at the same time. It was nice to pick his brain on some things that had been bothering us- like how is your Czech? To which he replied in Czech “I don’t speak Czech.” We had a plan to learn some basic Czech before arriving in the Cesky Krumlov but it’s been really hard to fit those exercises in- or at least get very far in them. I know how to count to twenty know as well as basic greetings, and pleasantries. But that’s about it. Must learn more. Soon!

Well, I’ll be brief cause all I’ve done to day is stare at a computer screen and cut up audio and transplant it on to visual pieces. We’ve produced some really interesting stuff but it’s rapid fire at best. We’ve over taken the third floor as Cyrus is away for two weeks so his room/lounge is open and we have two very large couches to spread out on to.

10-10-10 @10:10am- nothing was happening. At 10:11am we started transferring files and recording audio B-Roll. I began to collect extra material from the spaces we had visited with the camera to fill out the audio textures we were about to start constructing.
With five to ten second textures we began to make the video loops and then pair them with audio responses. The methodology of the sound construction was a response to what was there, what wasn’t there and what could be implied based upon the event recordings. We also incorporated sound recorded from Carnival as we were still thinking about what happens inside of Elsewhere as being part of the new collection to draw from.
Um, the video count has gone through the roof. Jennida wants to try and do something like 100 loops. Looks like we have to be done by Tuesday. That’s two days from now. Its go time!

Today was really a fun and interesting day. We had a lot of people come through by in ones and pairs and groups larger than fives. Some brought their kids and some brought their child like appreciation. One of the members of Invisible brought his wife and children and responded to the even saying it was the best hour he had spent in a long time. That was as good of an endorsement for me as I needed. We recorded all of the goings on with four different audio recorders. We brought in people and introduced them to what was going on and let them loose on it all. There were kids singing in Swahili and people composing a lullaby for the new dream room that Nora was in the process of constructing. Eventually we all shared a meal of Mac and cheese and some other very delicious home made offerings. Afterwards everyone brought different items into the large room and we proceeded to perform together John Cage Style. Later on one of the newest residents Corwin commented that it seemed to work really well and that there were times that things seemed to almost expand beyond the boundaries and into chaos but every time seemed to come back into something controllable. There were really no instructions given to anyone, only some silent suggestions here and there. Everyone tried to experiment and play with one another, listening and responding more than I would have expected with objects that ranged from toy balls filled with jingly things, pots, lamps, kitchen utensils, glasses, broken motors, keys, change and grates. With all the objects available and all the methods of manipulation and amplification one woman was satisfied to keep the beat by slapping her hand against her knees. Rainbow sherbet and cobbler followed the music circus. Twas a good night indeed. And outside Elsewhere the custom rides began to line up down the street for the human and auto parade that was to ensue.
